DEVAS AND DEVATAS : SATI AND PARVATI, MISSING LINKS IN COSMOGONY

DEVAS AND DEVATAS

by

It has been many months since this topic was revisited.

The recent articles on Sookta such as the Woman of Mythic times, and
Nicola Tesla and his association with Swami Vivekananda bring back
the memories of Demystifying Durga and the Ratri Devi previously
published on this blog around the Navaratri Festival last year.

The myth of Sati comes to mind. How this story from the Shiva
Purana has been delegated to mythology and not explored from the
point of view of cosmogony?

The supreme being or Brahman of the Vedas is pure consciousness.

It was also called Shiva, the word 'shiva' standing for pure.

Brahman is Sat, Chid, Ananda.

From Sat emerges the pure energy Sati of enormous infinite magnitude.
When it started condensing into mass may be only 4.6% of it became
the matter in the Universe ( ten raised to 42 to 78, actually less than 1 googol of
number of atoms and subatomic particles) but this transformation permanently changed
Sati into Prakriti. Prakriti was the name given to the primordial energy
present in the manifest Universe and the Unmanifest Sati or Moola
Prakriti permanently disappeared in its original form. This was a
great tragedy in the mythological story of the close relationship
between Shiva and Sati. Daksha is also one of the thousand names
of Vishnu the sustaining force in the Universe that gives birth to Sati.
These are all important events in the evolution of the Universe, and hence
when consciousness clearly has a darshan (view) of these principles these
become Devatas, they come alive for the mind that has these illuminating insights.

In the Sankhya (Darshana) one sees no mention of Sati. The Naasadeeya Sookta
of the Rig Vedas refers to emergence of dark energy and origin of time.
How could time exist or be measured before the emergence of matter and motion?

Sati in the evolution of the universe predates emergence of prakriti and
(photons) elementary particles of light in wave forms bombarding the universe
with particles of waves carrying energy. This principle of light is deified in the Vedas
as Mitra or Surya. Agni the transforming principle (symbolized by fire on this earth
where there is abundance of Oxygen supply for combustion,) and of course, the electrical
energy signified by Indra are the two other primordial energies to be recognized in the Vedas.
Thus Agni, Indra and Mitra are given prominence in the very first few Sooktas of Rig Veda,
and of course, respectfully revered.

These three entities or principles in the Universe are not limited to the Solar system but
are crucial for human life to exist among many other principles being elucidated in the
brief articles on the "Tit Bits of Rig Veda" on this blog.

Sati is of historical importance in the cosmogony but is revived or does
exist in the Universe as dark energy. (This Sati has no relationship to the evil practice of
Sati banned centuries ago). The 4.6% of matter and another 25% of dark matter still leaves
70% of dark energy filling this Universe.

Durga or Parvati as the representations of Prakriti are later forms of Sati.

The mythological account of Sati depicted in the Hindi television series "Devonke Dev Mahadev"
can be viewed from the point of view of the evolution of the Universe presented in the
comprehensible anthropomorphic story.

It is simply not possible for the human mind to comprehend the dimensions of the Universe
or infinite number of Universes as they exist. Suffice it to say Sati and Parvati or Durga
as predating the manifest Universe/s and filling the 70% of the Universe or Universes in the Energy form (Shakti) are also beyond the comprehension of human mind, and are mind boggling entities that most certainly deserved to be recognized as Devatas as per the seers who composed the Vedas (knowledge - cosmic knowledge). Those who see these as Sanatana meaning eternal perpetual principles also have the revelation of their status as devatas.

(The author kindly thanks Dileep Joshi and acknowledges his contribution in clarifying the  ideas pertaining to the nature of physical Universe, the composition of matter, dark matter and energy
given in percentages above are currently speculated approximate estimates.)
